Garage cabinets: what survives a room that is not a room

A garage is the harshest environment furniture in a house ever sees. It freezes and thaws, the floor gets wet, a car brings in water and salt, and the loads are point loads made of metal. Ordinary cabinets can work there and only if you make specific decisions: get everything off the floor, seal every edge, and put the strength where the weight goes.

Hang what you can and stand the rest on legs, because the garage floor is the enemy. Keep the depth down to 12 to 16"along the walls a car passes, since a 24" run can cost you the ability to open a car door. Band every edge rather than only the visible ones. Use plywood where the load and the damp are, and be realistic about what board furniture is for: a garage will also want a steel rack or a wall system for the heavy and the filthy.

What a garage does to furniture

Four things, and they are all worse than the equivalent in a kitchen:

  • The floor is wet, on purpose. Garage slabs are laid to fall towards the door or a drain, and a car brings in rain and snow that runs off and pools. Anything standing directly on that floor has its bottom edge in water several times a winter.
  • The air swings. An unheated garage cycles through temperature and humidity far more than a house, and every cycle moves moisture in and out of any exposed material.
  • Condensation lands on cold surfaces. A cold wall on a mild damp day gets wet without anything spilling, which is why the backs of garage cabinets suffer even when the floor is dry.
  • The loads are concentrated. Paint tins, tool boxes and a car battery are small, heavy and unforgiving of a shelf that was sized for towels.

None of that makes board cabinets impossible. It makes the sloppy version fail quickly and the careful version last, which is a distinction worth understanding before you buy either.

Get everything off the floor

This is the single most valuable decision on the page, and it is nearly free.

Wall-hung cabinets put the box out of the water entirely, leave the floor clear for sweeping and for the things that genuinely live on a floor, and take the wall space above head height that a garage has in abundance. The requirement is structural: a wall-hung cabinet carries everything inside it through its fixings, so it needs a hanging rail or a full-thickness back and something solid to screw into. Floor cabinets on legs are the next best thing, and adjustable legs do two jobs here rather than one. They lift the carcass clear of the wet, and they take out the fall of the slab, which is deliberate and can be enough to make a run of cabinets visibly out of level. A cabinet standing directly on a garage floor has neither advantage.

Whatever stands on the floor, band the bottom edges. Which brings us to the part people skip.

Band every edge, not the visible ones

The default coverage on cabinets, ours included, seals what you see: all four edges of the fronts and the front edge of each carcass panel. The rest of the edges, at the back, at the floor and where cabinets meet, are left bare because in a bedroom nothing ever reaches them.

A garage reaches them. Water on the floor finds the bottom edge, condensation on the wall finds the back edge, and once a chipboard core takes water it swells permanently. So in this room the answer is full coverage, and it is one of the cheapest upgrades available: it adds tape metres and a machine pass on edges nobody looks at, and it is the difference between a cabinet that dies and one that does not. Being straight about our own position: we do not test cabinets for unheated or damp environments, and we cannot tell you ours are rated for a garage. What we can do is build them from the boards above, seal every edge, put them on legs or on a rail, and explain how each material behaves. In a dry, attached, insulated garage that is a straightforward yes. In a detached unheated garage that gets genuinely damp, board cabinets are a compromise you should make knowingly, and steel is what commercial systems use for a reason.

Plywood is where the money goes if you spend any. It holds a screw far better than chipboard, which matters when a shelf is carrying tool boxes; it is stiffer over a span; and it tolerates the damp far better because the wood is still in continuous veneers. Depth: the car decides

A kitchen base cabinet is 24" deep and a garage rarely wants that along a wall the car passes. Measure the gap between your car and the wall with the doors open before choosing anything, because losing the ability to get out of the driver's door is the most common self-inflicted garage mistake.

  • 12 to 16" along the car holds an enormous amount and keeps the walkway. Most of what lives in a garage is small and heavy rather than bulky.
  • 24" on the end wall, where nothing passes, for the bulky things: a workbench, bags of compost, large boxes.
  • Above the bonnet, the depth can go back up, because the car is lower there. This is the wall people forget.

Also plan for the door mechanism. A sectional garage door and its track occupy the ceiling and a strip of the side walls, and cabinets that collide with a door in motion are discovered dramatically.

Shelves and loads

Garage shelves fail more often than garage cabinets, because the loads are heavy and concentrated and the spans tend to be long. Everything in the shelf guide applies with the numbers turned up:

  • Shorten the span before anything else. Deflection grows with the cube of it, so splitting a long run with a partition beats every other fix.
  • Fixed rather than pin-mounted where the load is real. A shelf resting on four pins is fine for a pantry and is not what you want under a box of hand tools.
  • Plywood for the shelves, even if the carcass is chipboard. It is the cheapest targeted upgrade in the room.

That is a test of the cabinet and its fixings, not a promise about your masonry, and in a garage the wall and the fixings are usually the weakest part of the assembly.

What not to put in board cabinets at all

  • Anything that leaks. Oil, solvent and screenwash live in a drip tray or on a steel shelf, not on a board one.
  • Anything you wash. If the plan involves hosing it down, board is the wrong container.
  • The really heavy and awkward. Wheels, engine parts, paving slabs. That is a steel rack, and it is cheaper than the cabinet you would break.
  • Long tools. Rakes, shovels and ladders belong on hooks or a wall track, which costs almost nothing and keeps them off the floor you are trying to clear.

A good garage is usually a mix: board cabinets for everything domestic and dry, hooks for the long stuff, and something metal for the heavy and the filthy. Designing for all three at once is more useful than pretending one system covers it.

Draw it shallow, banded and off the floor
