Walk-in closet layouts: what fits in the room you have
A walk-in trades floor area for storage on more than one wall, and whether that trade is worth it comes down to arithmetic you can do in a minute. Hanging is 24 inches deep on every wall you use, a walkway needs at least 36 inches, and a drawer pulls most of its own depth into that walkway when you open it. Everything below follows from those three facts.
Hanging on one wall needs a room about 60" wide. Hanging on two facing walls needs about 84", and that is the classic small walk-in. An island needs its own depth plus a walkway on both sides, which pushes the room past 11 feet. Anything narrower than these and the walk-in becomes a corridor with clothes in it, which stores less than a reach-in closet of the same floor area.
The arithmetic behind every number here
Most answers to “minimum walk-in closet size” are presented as standards. They are additions, and once you can do them yourself you can size any room:
24" per wall of hanging. That is the width of a coat hanger with clothes on it, and it is the same figure whether the closet is grand or modest. The dimensions guide covers what happens if you try to go shallower.
36" of walkway, minimum. Enough to stand, turn, and pass a doorway. It is the same number kitchens use for a passage nobody works in, and a closet walkway is exactly that.
Add drawer travel to the walkway.This is the one people miss. A drawer pulls out most of its own depth, so a bank of drawers facing a hanging rail across a 36" gap leaves you very little room to stand while the drawer is open.
Add up what your layout uses and compare with the room. If the answer is close, the walk-in will feel tight in a way that no amount of clever fitting fixes.

Those widths assume hanging depth on each wall used. If one wall carries only shelves at 12 to 16", subtract the difference, which is often exactly what makes a tight room work. Shelves for folded clothes do not need hanger depth, and using shallower cabinets on one side is the most common way to rescue a narrow walk-in.
The corner problem, quietly expensive
Wherever two runs of hanging meet at a right angle, the last stretch of each rail runs into the return. Clothes at the very end of a rail cannot be pulled out past the perpendicular run, so the corner holds garments you can see and cannot easily remove.
Three ways people handle it, in order of how well they work:
Stop one run short and put shelves in the corner. Shelves are accessed from the front, so the corner stops being a hanging problem. This is the simplest and usually the best.
Run one rail into the corner and accept the loss. Put long-term storage there, out of season coats and suit bags, and treat it as an archive rather than daily access.
Use a corner unit designed for it. They exist, they cost, and they are a specialist purchase rather than something we build.
The island: usually the first thing to cut
An island in a closet is a drawer chest with a surface on top, and it is the feature people want most and can least often justify. It needs its own depth plus a walkway on every side you use, so it does not add storage to a room, it adds storage in exchange for a great deal of floor.
Where it earns its place is folding and packing. A flat surface at waist height, in the room where the clothes live, is genuinely useful if you have space for it. Where it fails is in a room that was already tight, where it turns two comfortable walkways into two awkward ones.
The cheaper version of the same idea: a run of drawers along the end wall with a worktop over them. You get the folding surface and the drawer storage without spending a walkway on it, and the middle of the room stays clear.
Doors, light and the things people forget
The door swing. A hinged door into a walk-in eats the walkway it opens into, and it will hit the first run of cabinets it meets. A sliding or pocket door removes the problem, and an opening with no door at all removes it entirely if the room allows.
Light. A windowless closet lit by one central bulb puts every rail in its own shadow, since you stand between the light and the clothes. Light along the runs beats light in the middle.
A mirror needs distance.A full length mirror directly facing a rail 36" away shows you a very close view of yourself. If the mirror matters, plan where you will stand.
Ventilation. A sealed room full of textiles in a humid climate is asking for trouble. If there is no airflow at all, leave the door louvred or undercut.
When a reach-in beats a walk-in
A walk-in spends floor on standing room. A reach-in spends none, so per square foot of floor it stores considerably more, and everything in it is visible at once from outside.
So the honest test is whether the room is wide enough for the walk-in to earn its walkway. In a space that only supports one wall of hanging plus a corridor, you have built a reach-in with a corridor attached, and the same floor area given to a wall of reach-in cabinets in the bedroom would hold more and cost less.
Where the walk-in wins is at two walls and above, where wrapping storage around you starts to beat lining it up in front of you, and where a dressing room is a room you want rather than storage you need.
Draw the walkway first
Put the room's real dimensions in, place the runs, and the walkway is what is left rather than what you hoped for. You can see whether a drawer opens comfortably opposite a rail before anything is built, and what each wall of cabinetry costs.
