Assembling flat-pack cabinets without ruining them
Flat-pack assembly goes wrong in a small number of predictable ways, and almost all of them are about sequence rather than skill. The holes are already drilled, the parts already fit, and the cabinet will go together with a hex key. What decides the result is the order you do it in, whether you check for square before you tighten, and knowing which mistakes cannot be undone.
Lay everything out and check it against the list before you start. Build on cardboard rather than on a hard floor. Put the back in during assembly if it slides into a groove, because it cannot be added afterwards. Assemble loosely, check the diagonals, and only then tighten. And stop when a connector is firm, since overtightening is the one mistake that damages a panel permanently.
Before the first fixing
Check the parts against the list. Ten minutes now beats discovering a missing panel with a half-built cabinet on the floor. Note that panels which look identical often are not, because the drilling differs between a left and a right side.
Sort by cabinet, not by type. A kitchen arrives as several cabinets in pieces. Group each one and build them one at a time rather than making a pile of all the sides.
Work on the packaging. Flatten the cardboard the parts came in and build on that. Every scratch and chipped edge in a flat-pack kitchen happens on the floor rather than in transit.
Give yourself room. A cabinet needs space to be rolled onto its face and back again, and doing that in a corridor is how panels get damaged.
Find the hex key and a screwdriver. Our cabinets go together with a hex key. A cordless driver is useful for the long work and dangerous at the last quarter turn, which is where overtightening happens.
The order that saves you taking it apart
Lay out one cabinet's parts face down on the cardboard, in roughly the positions they will occupy. Identify which face of each panel is the inside, because the drilling tells you and because a panel fitted the wrong way round is the most common error.
Fit the connectors into their pockets in the panels that carry them, before anything is stood up.
Join the bottom to one side, then the top or the top rails, so you have a U on the floor.
Slide the back in now if it is a grooved back. This is the step that catches people. A thin back that sits in a groove machined into all four parts has to go in while the box is still open, and it cannot be added once the fourth panel is on. Close the second side and bring all the fixings up finger tight, with nothing fully tightened.
Check the diagonals. Measure corner to corner both ways. Equal means square; different means push the long diagonal until they match.
Now tighten, working around the cabinet rather than finishing one corner at a time.
Fit the legs or the plinth, then stand it up.
Hang the fronts last, after the cabinet is in position and levelled, because a door adjusted on the floor will need doing again on the wall.
Step six is the one people skip and it is the difference between doors that line up and doors that never do. A box tightened out of square is locked that way, and every front you hang on it inherits the error.

Stop and check orientation. Holes are pre-drilled and they are correct
The first one deserves emphasis because it is silent. An overtightened connector does not announce itself: the joint feels solid, and the board around the fixing has already crushed. You find out later, when that corner works loose and will not pull up again no matter how hard you turn it. Stop at firm.
If a hole does not line up
It is worth knowing what is actually in front of you. Every hole in your parts, the connector pockets, the shelf pin holes, the hinge cups and the plate rows, is machined before the parts are packed, from the same drawing that priced the job. The pattern is a grid rather than a series of individual decisions, and it does not vary from cabinet to cabinet.
So if something does not line up, work through this order:
Is the panel the right way round? Inside and outside faces are not interchangeable, and a mirrored pair looks identical from a distance.
Is it the right panel? Left and right sides differ in their drilling even when they are the same size.
Is it upside down? Hole patterns are usually not symmetrical top to bottom.
Reaching for a drill should be the last resort rather than the first instinct, and if a part is genuinely wrong, tell us instead of modifying it, because a modified part cannot be replaced under any sensible arrangement.
Fronts, and the adjustment that makes it look professional
Hanging doors is where a self-assembled kitchen either looks fitted or looks assembled, and the difference is almost entirely in the last step.
Concealed hinges clip on and off their plates in seconds, so a door can be lifted away while you work and put back in exactly the same place. More importantly, they adjust in three directions after the door is hung: side to side, in and out, and up and down. Nobody builds even gaps into a cabinet. They are dialled in at the end, and the hinge guide covers how.
Two rules that speed it up:
Level and secure the cabinets first. Adjusting doors on a run that is still moving is wasted work, and the legs give you around 30 mm to take out an uneven floor.
Work along the run, not door by door. Gaps are read across a whole elevation, so set one door as your reference and match the rest to it.
What to hand to someone else
Assembling boxes is straightforward work that most people can do. Several parts of a kitchen fit are not, and there is no prize for doing them yourself:
Anything involving water, gas or a consumer unit. Plumbing and electrics are trades for reasons that are not about skill alone.
Fixing wall cabinets to an unknown wall. Loaded wall cabinets are heavy, and the failure mode is a cupboard coming off a wall onto a worktop.
Worktops. Cutting stone or laminate to fit a room that is not square is a specialist job, and mistakes are expensive rather than annoying.
Appliance connections. Ovens, hobs and extraction have their own requirements and their own certificates.
A sensible division for most people is to assemble the cabinets yourself, which is the slow repetitive part, and to bring someone in for the install. How you split it is your call: build and fit it yourself, use a local fitter, or ask us where we cover your area.

What order should you assemble a flat-pack cabinet in?

Why does a cabinet back have to go in during assembly?
Because a thin back that sits in a groove is captured on all four sides by the panels around it, so it has to slide in while the box is still open. Once the last panel is on there is no way to introduce it without dismantling the cabinet. Not every back behaves this way: a back applied to the rear edges can be fitted afterwards, and a full-thickness structural back is part of the assembly like any other panel. Check which one your cabinet has before you start, because this is the single most common reason people take a finished box apart again.
Can you overtighten flat-pack connectors?
Yes, and it is the mistake that permanently damages a panel. These fittings clamp two panels together and do not need force, and past a certain point the fixing crushes the board around its hole. It is silent when it happens: the joint feels solid at the time, and you discover the problem later when that corner works loose and will not pull up again however hard you turn it. Stop when the joint is firm, and be careful with a cordless driver, which is useful for the long work and hazardous in the last quarter turn.
How do you make sure a cabinet is square?
Assemble it loosely with every fixing finger tight and nothing fully tightened, then measure corner to corner in both directions across the open face. Equal diagonals mean the cabinet is square; different diagonals mean it is a parallelogram, and pushing the longer diagonal until the two match corrects it. Only then tighten, working around the box rather than finishing one corner at a time. Skipping this is what produces cabinets whose doors never line up, because a box tightened out of square is locked that way and every front inherits the error.
What if the holes do not line up?
It is almost always the part rather than the drilling, since every hole is machined before packing from the same drawing that priced the job, on a regular grid that does not vary between cabinets. Check three things in order: whether the panel is the right way round, since inside and outside faces are not interchangeable; whether it is the correct panel, since left and right sides differ in drilling even at the same size; and whether it is upside down, since hole patterns are rarely symmetrical top to bottom. Reaching for a drill should be a last resort, and a genuinely wrong part should be reported rather than modified.
How do you get even gaps between cabinet doors?
By adjusting them after they are hung, which is what concealed hinges are designed for. They move in three directions, side to side, in and out and up and down, and no cabinet is built with even gaps: they are dialled in at the end. Two things make it quick. Level and secure the cabinets first, since adjusting doors on a run that is still moving is wasted effort and the legs give you around 30 mm of levelling. Should I assemble kitchen cabinets myself or hire someone?
Assembling the boxes is repetitive work that most people can do, and it is the part that takes the time.
